Rail Hot Spots - A True Train Watching Experience

This programme begins at Elford Loop in Staffordshire where a variety of both freight and passenger trains can be seen. The location sports a loop which provides excellent viewing for the study of both locomotives and rolling stock. This section will also provide you with a few surprises! Moving north to Barnetby, this location must rank as a top hot spot for the pure freight enthusiast. We visited three locations in this area for non-stop rail action. We filmed the Class 56 hard at work together with Class 60s and 66s in wonderful afternoon sunshine. Filmed on separate days, Linslade on the four track section of the West Coast Mainline sees a considerable amount of both freight and passenger trains including the celebrated Class 86s and 87s plus Virgins newly introduced Class 390 Pendolinos. Also in this section you see the illusive Scotts sleeper and a Class 37 deputising for a Class 66 on a stone working. All this and much, much more.

Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity. This series is a collection of some of those shots and Part III covers the Birmingham area and the North Midlands and Central Wales. We begin at Nuneaton and Coventry, witnessing both areas before the erection of overhead wires. From Coventry we move to Birmingham Station and see New Street Station pre-building. A brief visit to Saltley Station and the Camp Hill gradient is followed by a compilation of trains filmed at Birminghams other main line station, Snow Hill. From Birmingham we move north to Stafford on the West Coast Main Line and then west to Shrewsbury. Part III concludes with some hard working steam hauled trains on Talerddig bank in mid Wales. All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of amateur cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity. This series is a collection of those shots and Part V covers the London area, the Isle of Wight and Scotland. Until the mid 1960s, the Isle of Wight still depended on small Victorian 0-4-4 tank engines of the O2 Class to operate its island network. Our cameramen were on hand to record some of these locomotives. Back on the mainland we travel via Southampton and Brighton to the London area where steam engines are seen at several of the main line terminus stations as well as in the suburbs. A brief look at Bletchley is followed by a comprehensive journey around Scotland before line closures and dieselisation were to change the countrys railway scene for ever. Fenland Trains - The Railways of East Anglia

We begin this DVD with an extensive look at the railways in the counties of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire; in particular, the city of Ely and its surrounding railway routes. Filmed between 2000 and 2004 we concentrate mainly on the freight scene in these areas. The freight in both counties are mainly aggregate, intermodel, and deep sea container workings. Locomotive classes hauling these trains consist of 37, 47, 56, 57, 58, 60 and, of course, the ubiquitous class 66. In addition to these freight workings we see the newly introduced ONE (formerly Anglia Railways) Train Operating Company seen in the summer of 2004. With the lowering of the Ipswich tunnel, diesel hauled passenger trains en route to London Liverpool Street were diverted through Ely. Both Anglia and ONE liveries can be seen with scenes of Elys magnificent cathedral. Moving a little east, we filmed at various locations between Ely and Bury St Edmunds, and finally we trek north across the flat lands of the Fens with its many unobstructed locations. Many freightliners can be seen bringing lots of colour to a somewhat barren landscape. Special trains such as steam and diesel in the form of Class 55 Deltics and Class 47s can also be seen in and around the Ely area, with no fewer than 30 locations visited. With detailed location maps it all adds up to a fascinating and intensive programme. Some narration is added together with train details and head codes. Also in this DVD is a short pictorial of what else Ely has to offer other than great train locations.

Steam Around the World.  The African Archives

Rails all the way from Cape to Cairo were once the dream of Victorian pioneer Cecil Rhodes. In 1965 and 1970, the dying years of the Age of Steam, Harry Dodge visited and recorded this incredible African legacy. Throughout Central and Southern Africa, the uncompromising terrain spawned some spectacular feats of engineering. Many of these, including the famous Victoria Falls bridge, are captured when huge fleets of Garratts still ruled supreme. Malawi Railway, Rhodesian Railways and Franco-Ethiopian Railways are all featured, as well as the steam trains of South Africa, Mozambique, Angola and the Sudan. This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusaist Harry P Dodge. The Ffestiniog Railway, starting on the glorious Welsh Coastline at Pothmadog, protected by the imposing castles of Harlech and Criccieth, is a memorable journey through the Snowdonia National Park. From Harbour Station at Porthmadog, the train climbs through the sleepy pastures and luscious forest, skirting lakes and waterfalls. clinging to and tunneling through the sides of mountains, the track takes in horseshoe bends which include a complete spiral. This area is so remote that the train is occasionally required to stop at isolated cottages whose inhabitants depend entirely upon the railway. Nuneaton and the Trent Valley Line

Filmed between 2001 and 2004 we visit the well known main line station of Nuneaton, and see the many changes in the infrastructure of the station and track work such as new platforms and the reinstatement of the flyover at Nuneaton. Main line passenger motive power was also to see a major change in the form of the Virgin Class 390 Pendolinos but as you will see the Class 87s were still in charge of main line passenger duties. The freight scene is intense and we can see trains serving the coal and steel industries, deep sea container traffic from companies such as EWS, GB rail freight, Freightliner and trains serving the automotive industries. Of special interest is footage of the Royal Train captured during Her Majestys Golden Jubilee tour and a charter train hauled by a Class 67. We were also fortunate to film a Class 175 Coradia.

The Heyday of British Steam.  London - The Isle of Wight - Scotland  Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of amateur cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity. All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

The Heyday of British Steam.  London - South Midlands - South West  Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of amateur cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity.  This series is a collection of some of those shots and Part I covers London, the South Midlands and the South West.  Our journey starts at Rugby and continues via Leamington Spa, Banbury, Oxford and Reading.  From Reading we head west, looking at Swindon Works shed and station.  We pause at Bath and Bristol before a nostalgic look at the former Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway.  From there its London via Salisbury and Basingstoke.  All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

The Heyday of British Steam.  East Midlands - The North East of England  Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of amateur cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity.  This series is a collection of some of those shots and Part II covers the East Midlands and the North East of England.  We begin at Leicester at the Great Central Station where experimental gas turbine locomotive GT3 is seen in the shed.  Then its north to Derby, via Loughborough and Nottingham.  From Nottingham we join the East Coast main line at Grantham and experience the majesty of the Gresley Pacifics at work, before moving north to Doncaster and York.  A brief visit to the Thirsk and Darlington area and then we cross to West Yorkshire for some steam trains on the magnificent Settle and Carlisle Line.  All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

The Heyday of British Steam.  Birmingham - The North Midlands - Wales  Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity.

The Heyday of British Steam.  The West Midlands - The North - The North West  Video technology came too late to record the golden years of Britains railways during the steam era, but thanks to a handful of cameramen armed with 8mm cine cameras, many images of the Iron Horse have been saved for posterity.  This series is a collection of some of those shots and Part IV covers the West Midlands and the North of England.  We begin at Gloucester where the diminutive former G.W.R. 0-4-2 tank engines were still working push and pull trains.  From Gloucester we head to the western suburbs of Birmingham via the famous Lickey Incline where heavyweight expresses could be seen struggling with the 1 in 37 gradient.  A look at Wolverhamptons Low Level Station before it closed, is followed by a journey to Manchester via Stoke on Trent, Crewe and Stockport.  After Manchester we cross the Pennines and end our journey at Sheffields Victoria Station where Directors 04s and K Class moguls were still hard at work.  All the shots, taken in the 1950s and 1960s, are totally original and are in full colour with sound track and commentary.

ARTIST
Featured Artist - Nicolas Trudgian

Having graduated from art college, Nicolas Trudgian spent many years as a professional illustrator before turning to a career in fine art painting. His crisp style of realism, attention to detail, compositional skills and bright use of colours, immediately found favour with collectors and demand for his original work soared on both sides of the Atlantic. Today, more than a decade after becoming a fine art painter, Nicolas Trudgian is firmly established within a tiny, elite group of aviation artists whose works are genuinely collected world-wide. When he paints an aircraft you can be sure he has researched it in every detail and when he puts it over a particular airfield, the chances are he has paid it a recent visit. Even when he paints a sunset over a tropical island, or mist hanging over a valley in China, most probably he has seen it with his own eyes. Nick was born and raised in the seafaring city of Plymouth, the port from which the Pilgrim Fathers set sail in 1620, and where Sir Francis Drake played bowls while awaiting the Spanish Armada. Growing up in a house close to the railway station within a busy military city, the harbour always teeming with naval vessels and the skies above resonating with the sounds of naval aircraft, it was not at all surprising the young Nick became fascinated with trains, boats and aircraft. It was from his father, himself a talented artist, that Nick acquired his love of drawing and surrounded by so much that was inspiring, there was never a shortage of ideas for pictures. His talent began to show at an early age and although he did well enough at school, he always spent a disproportionate amount of time drawing. People talked about him becoming a Naval officer or an architect but in 1975 Nick's mind was made up. When he told his careers teacher he wanted to go to art school the man said, 'Now come on, what do you really want to do? After leaving school Nick began a one-year foundation course at the Plymouth College of Art. Now armed with an impressive portfolio containing paintings of jet aircraft, trains, even wildlife, he was immediately accepted at every college he applied to join. He chose a course at the Falmouth College of Art in Cornwall specialising in technical illustration and paintings of machines and vehicles for industry. It was perfect for Nick, and he was to become one of the star pupils. One of the lecturers commented at the time: Every college needs someone with a talent like Nick to raise the standards sky high; he carried all the other students along with him, and created an effect which will last for years to come. Two weeks after leaving art college Nick blew every penny he had on a trip to South Africa to ride the great steam trains across the desert, sketching them at every opportunity. Returning to England, in best traditions of all young artists, he struggled to make a living. Paintings by an unknown artist didn't fetch much despite the painstaking effort and time Nick put into each work, so when the college he had recently left offered him a job as a lecturer, he jumped at the chance. The money was good and he discovered that he really enjoyed teaching. Throughout the 1970s Nick was much involved with a railway preservation society near Plymouth and it was through the railway society that he had his first pictures reproduced as prints. But Nick felt he needed to advance his career and in summer 1985 Nick moved away from Cornwall to join an energetic new design studio in Wiltshire. Here he painted detailed artwork for many major companies including Rolls Royce, General Motors, Volvo Trucks, Alfa Romeo and, to his delight, the aviation and defence industries. He remembers the job as exciting though stressful, often requiring him to work right through the night to meet a client's deadline. Here he learned to be disciplined and fast. Towards the end of the 1980's Nick had the chance to work for the Military Gallery. This was the break that for years he had been striving towards and with typical enthusiasm, flung himself into his new role. After completing a series of aviation posters, including a gigantic painting to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Royal Air Force, Nick's first aviation scene to be published as a limited edition was launched by the Military Gallery in 1991. Despite the fact he was unknown in the field, it was an immediate success. Over the past decade Nick has earned a special reputation for giving those who love his work much more than just aircraft in his paintings. He goes to enormous lengths with his backgrounds, filling them with interesting and accurate detail, all designed to help give the aircraft in his paintings a tremendous sense of location and purpose. His landscapes are quite breathtaking and his buildings demonstrate an uncanny knowledge of perspective but it is the hardware in his paintings which are most striking. Whether it is an aircraft, tank, petrol bowser, or tractor, Nick brings it to life with all the inordinate skill of a truly accomplished fine art painter. A prodigious researcher, Nick travels extensively in his constant quest for information and fresh ideas. He has visited India, China, South Africa, South America, the Caribbean and travels regularly to the United States and Canada. He likes nothing better than to be out and about with sketchbook at the ready and if there is an old steam train in the vicinity, well that's a bonus!
